A "neglected" building on Beethovenstraat in Amsterdam has been transformed into the new housing for the more than 600 employees of the Goede Doelen Loterijen. It is the most sustainably renovated building in the Netherlands. VDNDP made the working drawings and the AS-Built (LOD500) model for the management and maintenance for the new office.
Top 25 in The Green Architecture Guide Amsterdam
The project fits right in with VDNDP's desire to create "smarter" buildings by (re)constructing them sustainably and circularly. The building uses eighty percent less energy than most newly built office buildings and has been awarded the (highest attainable) sustainability label BREEAM Outstanding.
The office was designed by architecture firm Benthem Crouwel and the interior design was provided by D/Dock.
The Green Architecture Guide of Amsterdam describes the 25 greenest buildings in Amsterdam. The sustainable transformation of the company building from 1978 on the corner of Prinses Irenestraat and Beethovenstraat resulted in a nice 7th place for the Goede Doelen Loterijen building.
The vacant building was first stripped of all non-essential elements and then integrated into a larger building. Materials from the demolished parts were reused, particularly in the concrete used for the new terraces in the atrium. Other sustainability measures were also taken to make the building energy-neutral, including the use of thermal energy storage, the installation of nearly a thousand solar panels and the reuse of rainwater for plumbing, the roof garden and the sprinkler system. In addition, the building's windows are equipped with energy-generating features and sensors that automatically activate blinds or air conditioning. The striking canopy is supported by columns that resemble trees and contains PVC cells that power the building. This makes the building sustainable and energy efficient in a visually appealing way.
