Located at the tip of Karlskrona Island in Amsterdam’s Houthaven, De Sfinx is a striking residential building with undulating brick facades. Designed by Hoogeveen Architects, the building combines robust architecture with a warm aesthetic, reflecting both the industrial history of the Houthaven and the modern, green aspirations of the new neighborhood.
In Amsterdam, De Sfinx, a striking residential building with undulating brick facades, was completed in November 2025. The design by Hoogeveen Architects combines robust architecture with a warm aesthetic, reflecting both the industrial history of the Houthaven and the modern, green aspirations of the new neighborhood. De Sfinx comprises 63 social housing apartments, spread across five floors, from the basement to the fourth floor. There is a variety of unit types—from compact studios to spacious three-bedroom apartments—offering something for everyone. About half of the units have their own outdoor space, ranging from a balcony to a terrace overlooking the communal courtyard garden or the waterfront. The communal courtyard garden is a green oasis in the city, where residents can meet and relax. With its location on the Gevlebrug and views over the water, De Sfinx offers a unique living experience in Amsterdam. De Sfinx is the final phase of Dura Vermeer’s three social housing development projects for co-developer Ymere in Amsterdam’s Houthaven. In collaboration with Dura Vermeer, VDNDP was responsible for developing the design from the final design phase (DO) through to the construction-ready design.
