VDNDP designed a new Center for Women & Children for Rijnstate Hospital. In the various projects for Rijnstate Hospital, we used our knowledge of hospitals to create a functional, feasible and achievable architectural design in which great attention was paid to the integral approach between construction and installations.
The Center for Women and Children focuses on family-centered care, privacy and comfort. On the hospital grounds, a piece was added and the adjacent part of the existing hospital was remodeled.
The challenge with this project was the demand for plenty of daylight and views without sacrificing privacy. One of the solutions to this issue was to design a two-story façade so that you don't have to constantly lower blinds or tape off windows. An added benefit: using slats makes it easier to keep the building cool in the summer.
During the design process, the project team worked with doctors, nurses and other stakeholders. They were able to walk through a virtual 3D model and shuffle boxes and furniture in mock-ups to come up with a convenient layout.
The design paid special attention to a child-friendly layout and took into account the limited mobility of patients and visitors. For example, counters have a lowered section and you will find several play and lounge areas for children of different ages in the building. Warm and friendly materials and colors were chosen so that the center really has its own identity.
For the Rijnstate hospital in Arnhem, VDNDP is (has been) involved in several projects. Besides designing a new Center for Woman and Child, we did the technical elaboration - from DO to UO for an operating room complex, we were elaborating architect for two cardiac catheterization rooms and for the renovation of a sub-floor where the intensive care/medium care sits.
