Specifying

Establishing choices in a design process is key in communication between parties and across phases. A clear testing framework leads to better choices and leaves room for optimization along the way. Through our way of specifying, architects can be confident that their design will be handled with care. Contractors know where they stand and can offer clarity to subcontractors and the client knows what will be delivered and has room to adjust. How do we do that?

Every project starts from certain frameworks, which sometimes fade somewhat into the background after the start of the design process. This is why we believe it is important to properly record the decisions we make together. After all, the agreed upon frameworks - and the why of them - are leading throughout the entire project.

Then VDNDP translates the client request and design into specifications that give meaning to the frameworks of the design. We capture what we do know, but also see the value of what we don't yet know. In our integrality loop, we show how we always weigh and test Program of Requirements, budget, advice, design and risks in relation to each other.

VDNDP tackles this dynamically: we vary the level of detail for each building component as needed. We look at what is crucial and record that which fits the purpose. Specifying for us therefore means: making it fit the task.

We analyze the logic, clarity and testability of Requirements Programs and ambition documents. From the analysis we make optimization proposals.

We convert PoRs and any other framework-setting ambition documents into a handy matrix, to which we add parameters for smart and clear testing.

In a design phase, we test the state of the design against the PoRs and any other framework-setting ambition documents. By testing, risks can be identified in time and choices can be recorded.

Specifying is fundamentally capturing choices. This means that specifications from coarse to fine, depending on the information needs, can be recorded and kept up to date. This can be done based on the NLSfb structure as well as in Stabu2 work type.

Specifications contain information that is and is not in parameters in the 3D BIM model. Smart links and alignment between specifications and geometric model bring information-driven work one step closer.
