The integrality loop

The integrality loop

Arriving at a well thought-out design is a challenging task. With any project, it is crucial to test at the right time whether design, advice, Program of Requirements (PoR) and budget are aligned and risks are manageable.

By going through the integrality process step by step in combination with the deployment of our expertise, we can get a grip on this together. Together with the design team, the client and other involved parties, we arrive at an integrally tuned design.

Design analysis
As an addition to (or part of) the design team, we analyze with our people the design and related documents integrally in terms of, for example, the schedule of requirements, regulations, manufacturability, feasibility and missing essential sub-designs that are needed for a successful integral project. We compile this into a design analysis using, among other things, a testing framework and fragments that, after weighing and assessing, are included in the design. It is important during this phase that everyone who is or will be involved contributes their knowledge and expertise. This gives more insight into the risks and their manageability.

BIM
Once we're on our way in the integrality loop, we start building a BIM model with the other design disciplines so that we can embed all the information and generate an integrally matched environmental permit or phase set from there.

Result
When the integrality loop has been completed in the right way, the choices made have been clearly recorded and choices yet to be made have been made explicitly. This provides a grip on process and result.

Together towards the best result, each from his own expertise

Steps

We analyze the quality and completeness of the pieces. Getting to the bottom of previous choices is essential. We collect our questions in a clear questionnaire. We convert PoRs and any other framework (ambition) documents into a handy matrix, to which we add parameters for smart and clear testing.

By creating fragments, we analyze the design principles in order to secure them in the principle details. We make nodes transparent. And we test the fragments for achieving the requirements of the Building Code.

Accompanying the draft are opinions and other documents. We identify bottlenecks in the mutual and integral coherence. We coordinate our findings with the design team and together see where there is room for solutions.

Here we look integrally at construction sequence and detachability. If necessary, we involve parties with specific knowledge in this. Health and safety are essential considerations here.

The next step is optimizations in building structure, building methodology, layout of floor plans, principle details and use of materials. Among other things, this contributes to the feasibility and quality of the building.

The state of the design is checked, design choices to be made are presented to the client and/or users. We use VR sessions and user meetings for this purpose.

The choices and optimizations made are incorporated into the design and principle detailing. Here the spirit of the design and the frameworks of aesthetics are leading.

Ultimately, it is important for subsequent phases to record unambiguously and clearly which choices were made while completing the loop. For this we can use our matrix specifications, the questionnaire and/or a technical description/specifications and a phase report.
